Popular weedkiller Roundup is on trial again as cancer victims demand justice. Cancer has taken an unrelenting toll on 72-year-old Mike Langford. After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2007 he suffered through five recurrences despite multiple rounds of chemotherapy and a stem cell transplant. A new study in the August issue of the Journal of Cleaner Production reveals that it is possible for farms to sequester carbon and reduce their overall greenhouse gas emissions. A University of Wisconsin Madison research group unveiled a dairy lifecycle assessment conducted on Organic Valley farms that shows small organic dairy farms, which focus on grazing and organic production techniques, are low greenhouse gas champions. Organic fresh produce saw increases last year for both dollar sales and volume, according to IRI OmniMarket Integrated Fresh multi-outlet data for the year ending Dec. 26, 2021. Total dollar sales reached $7.63 billion, up 5.2% over the previous year, while overall volume sales increased nearly one percentage point to 2.7 billion pounds. In contrast, dollar sales for conventional produce increased just 2.3% over the previous year and volume sales declined 3.9%. The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced a Food System Transformation framework that includes up to $300 million in a new Organic Transition Initiative to provide comprehensive support for farmers to transition to organic production. The new initiative acknowledges that organic production has climate and environmental benefits, and allows producers to demand a premium in the marketplace, “and thus take home a greater share of the food dollar,” according to an official USDA statement. The Initiative sets the stage for a food system transformation that makes organic the norm – by aligning public spending with public interests in thriving ecosystems and healthy, affordable food.
