Why is it important for your brand to celebrate Earth Month and how are you celebrating throughout the month?
During Earth Month, we are reflecting on our ecological footprint and how our social and environmental goals can be achieved. We are celebrating by supporting farmers who are interested in planting trees, shrubs, and other vegetation on their chicken pastures. These regenerative agriculture practices provide shade for the hens, potential income for the farmers, and contribute to a healthy Earth. For example, Farmer Alvin Jantzi in Crofton, Kentucky planted elderberry shrubs to provide extra shade and nutrition for his hens while regenerating the soil and opening up potential enterprising opportunities for himself.
What does your brand do to help create a healthier environment and to treat the planet more respectfully every day?
100% of the farms and feed in the Handsome Brook Farms network are USDA certified organic. We are dedicated to regenerative farming practices to mitigate any harmful impacts on the land, and our partnerships with agroforestry consultants and USDA soil technicians ensure that farmers are set up for success. Also, as a Certified B Corp, we meet stringent standards of social and environmental performance through transparency and accountability.
Why is it important for your brand to be organic?
It’s important in order to regenerate our land and provide clean, responsibly raised protein for our customers. At HBF we strive to Act Handsomely: that means working hard to ensure personal, public, and planetary health are prioritized at every turn.
What does organic do to make the planet healthier?
Organic farms increase biodiversity (all life on the farm) and promote sustainable use of our land. We realize Handsome Brook Farms is one small part of a complex interactive world, but everyone plays a part in the care of our planet. Our goal is to build a just food system and minimize our impact on climate change, our lands, and our water.
How can regular consumers celebrate Earth Month?
We hope everyone has the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the beauty of nature. A deep connection to our land inspires us all to be stewards of our natural resources and make sure that the next generations are able to witness the beauty that surrounds us every day.
