Organic farmers find profitable niche

From 2011 to 2021, certified organic cropland acres increased by 79% (to 3.6 million acres) and certified operations increased more than 90% (to 17,445 farms), according to USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service surveys. Paul Hoffman farms in northern LaSalle County, Illinois. He has been certified organic since 2014. His parents started farming organically in the late 1990s. Hoffman said organic corn and soybeans are the dominant source of revenue for his farm. However, cereal grains are a key part of his rotation. He has also grown canola, sunflowers, buckwheat, vegetable seed and winter squash.
