The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced some details of its $75-million investment in conservation assistance for producers transitioning to organic production, according to an agency press release. One Degree Organics is committed to sustainable farming and works directly with a network of 40 growers and producers who share the same values of organic, toxic-free, and third-party certified glyphosate-free farming. Sustainable agriculture practices are also becoming more common in the wine industry. A sustainable certification requires the vineyard to use practices that conserve energy and water and promote the earth’s long-term health and the surrounding environment. In the global wine market, the market share of organic wines is between 4-5%. Simply put, organic wines are those produced with organically grown grapes, meaning they are grown without the use of synthetic chemicals or pesticides. Southern Oregon’s Troon Vineyard is the second vineyard in the world — and fourth farm overall — to receive the Regenerative Organic Alliance’s Regenerative Organic Certified Gold designation. It will also be the first winery to release wines with the Regenerative Organic Certified Gold label on it. Leaders from Mexico, the United States, and Canada are gathered at the North American Leaders’ Summit, where, among other issues, they will debate the timeline and scope of Mexico’s ban on cultivating and importing genetically modified (GM) corn. More than 100 organizations from the three countries delivered a letter to Mexican senators. In the letter, peasant organizations, farmers, environmentalists, unions, churches, social activists, academics, and journalists demand that governments prioritize the production of biodiversity and the right to food sovereignty and security over corporate interests.
