Michelob ULTRA Pure Gold Contract for Change, a program run by Anheuser Busch, is funding $500,000 in grants to help farmer’s transition to organic production in partnership with California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF). Farmers wanting to transition to organic farming may be eligible for a $5,000 grant through this program. With wildfires blazing in the West and hurricanes blowing in the South, the Organic Trade Association has begun a campaign to elevate organic farming in federal policy to mitigate climate change. Over the past two weeks, the association has held a virtual “fly-in” to meet with members of Congress to advocate for organic practices in science-based solutions. In response to thousands of claims that its weedkiller Roundup causes cancer, the multinational corporation Bayer announced a new legal settlement. But according to student-led organization Herbicide-Free Campus (HFC), Bayer’s proposal falls short. Founded by undergraduates at UC Berkeley, HFC works to eliminate synthetic herbicides from schools across America. By driving the transition to organic land management, HFC aims to establish safer working and learning conditions for all. U.S. organic production growth looks strong. More land and operations have converted to U.S. Department of Agriculture-certified organic production during 2020, expanding the footprint of organics within U.S. agriculture, according to the newly released “Mercaris Commodity Outlook” for 2020-21. Mercaris is the nation’s leading market data service and online trading platform for organic, non-genetically modified organism (GMO) and certified agricultural commodities. The organic food industry in Canada continues to see growth, with sales now at $6.9 billion annually, representing 3.2% of grocery sales. Those numbers are up from $5.4 billion and 2.6% in 2017, according to a news release.
