Avoiding toxic chemicals is one of the reasons consumers choose organic food. More and more, we are learning that pesticides are showing up as residues on our produce, depleting soil, causing dead zones in the ocean, and even ending up in our drinking water. Oftentimes these chemicals haven’t been fully studied and new research is always being done.

Here are 5 new reports that relate to pesticide contamination and avoiding pesticides:

1. Neonicotinoid Residue Found In Drinking Water. Neonicotinoids—the nicotine-like class of insecticides that’s been linked to the widespread deaths of bees—are, weirdly, under-studied. For the first time, these chemicals are showing up in drinking water. Learn more about the findings here.

2. Glyphosate To Join Proposition 65 List The herbicide glyphosate, found in Monsanto’s Roundup, is to be added to the list of chemicals known to cause cancer under California’s Proposition 65 legislation, which means companies producing products containing residues of the popular herbicide may in have to feature warning labels in the future. 3. Scott Pruitt chooses not to ban a toxic pesticide called chlorpyrifos. It’s worth noting that even after the Scientific Advisory Panels (SAP) forced the EPA to review its findings, the EPA still declared chlorpyrifos to be excessively dangerous. But since Scott Pruitt has declared that the pesticide will not be banned, chlorpyrifos will continue to be used. Unless Scott Pruitt changes his stance, the EPA will review the pesticide sometime before 2022. Learn more.

4. High Glyphosate Levels in Mothers Leads to Shorter Pregnancies and Smaller Babies – New Ongoing Study. Children’s Environmental Health Network (CEHN) announced new evidence highlighting growing concern over sharply rising herbicide use and risks to pregnant women and children living in the rural Midwest. 5. Canadians Report Weed Killer Detected in 30 Percent of Food Tested. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has gone where the U.S. government dares not tread – testing thousands of foods commonly consumed by its citizens for residues of a controversial herbicide linked to cancer.
